Nepal Extends Curfew to Saptari as Communal Unrest Spreads

Date:

International Desk:

Nepalese authorities on Friday imposed an indefinite curfew in parts of the southern Saptari district bordering India as communal unrest spread beyond neighbouring Sunsari, where violent clashes erupted earlier this week.

The District Administration Office enforced the curfew in parts of Rajbiraj Municipality from 8:00 a.m. (local time) as a precautionary measure following protests over the recent communal violence in Sunsari.

Tensions have remained high across several districts since the clashes broke out over the weekend, prompting authorities to impose curfews, issue prohibitory orders, and deploy additional security personnel to prevent further violence.

Officials said the restrictions were introduced to maintain law and order and to stop the unrest from escalating. Security forces have been deployed in sensitive areas, while authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.

The government has urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement as efforts continue to restore normalcy in the affected districts.
