Hundreds of thousands of mourning citizens converged on Tehran’s Grand Mosalla on Sunday morning (July 5, 2026) to attend the funeral prayers of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The state funeral, marking the second day of a seven-day national mourning period, was attended by Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, and high-ranking geopolitical dignitaries.
According to the state news agency IRNA, Grand Ayatollah Ja’far Sobhani led the funeral prayers for the late Supreme Leader and accompanying family members who were killed on February 28 during initial airstrikes targeting Tehran.
While Khamenei’s three sons—Masoud, Meysam, and Mostafa—were visible alongside Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force Commander Ismail Qaani, the newly appointed Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Ali Khamenei, was absent from the congregation due to ongoing convalescence and strict structural security protocols.
The Cabinet has declared a nationwide public holiday to facilitate the extensive mourning processions. Following the capital services, the casket will be escorted to the holy city of Qom on Monday, before being airlifted to Najaf International Airport in neighboring Iraq on Wednesday.
After major processional marches through the holy sanctuaries of Najaf and Karbala, the body will return to Iran for final interment in his northeastern birthplace of Mashhad.
