TBM Report
The Measles outbreak in Bangladesh has taken a severe turn, with seven more deaths reported in the last 24 hours. According to a report released on Friday (May 8, 2026) by the Health Emergency Operation Center and Control Room under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), one fatality was confirmed to be from Measles, while the other six died from suspected symptoms. Since March 15, the combined death toll from confirmed and suspected Measles has reached 343.
The DGHS data reveals a staggering surge in infections, with 6,490 confirmed cases and 46,710 suspected cases recorded since the mid-March outbreak. To date, 32,862 people have been hospitalized across the country, while 29,152 have recovered. The high volume of patients is putting significant pressure on the national healthcare infrastructure, necessitating urgent intervention.
Dhaka division remains the epicenter of the crisis, reporting the highest number of confirmed deaths (38) and suspected fatalities (132). Other divisions, including Rajshahi, Chittagong, and Barisal, have also reported numerous deaths. Notably, the Rangpur division has not yet reported any fatalities related to confirmed or suspected Measles. The geographic spread suggests that urban density in Dhaka may be contributing to the rapid transmission of the virus.
Health officials have confirmed the arrival of 1.5 million Measles vaccines to curb the spread. Experts emphasize that the mortality rate is particularly high among children and individuals with compromised immunity. While the government efforts are underway, the sheer number of suspected cases highlights a critical need for mass immunization and improved public awareness to contain what is becoming a significant public health emergency.
