Security tightened around US embassy in Dhaka; Home Minister meets ambassador

Date:

TBM Report

In response to the current global situation, the Bangladesh government has significantly intensified security measures across the diplomatic enclave, including the U.S. Embassy. Following a high-level meeting on Monday (March 2, 2026), Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed confirmed that Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have been deployed alongside regular police units to ensure an impenetrable security layer.

During the meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs, U.S. Ambassador Brent Christensen proposed the urgent implementation of the ‘Special Programme for Embassy Augmentation and Response’ (SPEAR). The Ambassador emphasized the need for a swift Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), noting that the designated funding might otherwise be diverted. Additionally, the discussions covered the ‘Electronic Nationality Verification’ (ENV) program, which, if implemented, would place Bangladesh in the ‘Green Zone’ for U.S. immigration, facilitating smoother legal travel.

The Home Minister reassured the U.S. delegation of Bangladesh’s commitment to being a steadfast ally in counter-terrorism. Both parties reviewed the long-standing cooperation in police training, where nearly 30,000 officers have been trained since 2010. Minister Ahmed pledged to address concerns regarding the continuity of these trained personnel within relevant units. The session concluded with a mutual agreement to expedite strategic protocols to safeguard regional and bilateral interests.
