A wave of violent protests over the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has left at least nine people dead in Karachi. The tragedy unfolded on Sunday (March 1, 2026) near the US Consulate located on Mai Kolachi Road, where demonstrators clashed fiercely with security forces. Law enforcement deployed tear gas and used batons to disperse the crowd, turning the high-security diplomatic zone into a battlefield.
Protesters reportedly attempted to storm the consulate building to express their outrage over the US-Israeli coordinated strikes in Tehran. Verified social media footage shared by international outlets, including Al Jazeera, depicted a segment of the mob shattering windows and setting fire to parts of the consulate premises. The Edhi Foundation and local police confirmed that the escalation forced security personnel to take defensive measures. Among the casualties, several police officers were also seriously injured during the turmoil.
While the exact cause of the deaths remains under investigation, Police Surgeon Dr. Summaiya Syed confirmed that nine bodies were transported to the Civil Hospital in Karachi. Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar has demanded an immediate inquiry into the incident, warning that “no one will be allowed to take the law into their own hands.” Security has been drastically tightened around sensitive diplomatic installations across the province, as similar protests were also reported in Islamabad and Lahore, reflecting a growing regional instability.
