U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that Washington may escalate its military response under a new initiative dubbed “Project Freedom Plus” if diplomatic discussions with Iran remain deadlocked. Speaking on the South Lawn of the White House on Saturday (May 9, 2026), Trump emphasized that the primary objective of this operation would be to ensure the free flow of maritime traffic through the strategic Strait of Hormuz.
The announcement comes after the temporary suspension of “Operation Project Freedom,” which was initially launched on May 4 but halted shortly after. Reports from The Jerusalem Post suggest that Trump was compelled to pause the offensive due to pressure from Saudi Arabia, which refused to allow the use of its airspace, and diplomatic appeals from Pakistan. Trump, however, framed the suspension as a strategic pause to allow peace talks in Islamabad a chance to succeed.
The current geopolitical crisis was triggered by a joint U.S.-Israeli strike on Iran on February 28, which resulted in the deaths of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other high-ranking officials. On the same day, a U.S. Tomahawk missile strike on the Sharjah Tayyibah Primary School in Minab killed 168 students—an event Tehran has formally classified as a war crime. In retaliation, Iran conducted over 100 retaliatory strikes against U.S. and Israeli bases across the Middle East during a 39-day period.
According to data from the Iranian Legal Medicine Organization, the conflict between February 28 and April 10 claimed 3,380 lives, including a significant number of medical professionals and civilians. Despite a fragile ceasefire brokered by Pakistan on April 8, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz on April 13 has brought both nations back to the brink of full-scale war. As direct talks in Islamabad continue without a breakthrough, Trump’s latest threat of a revamped military operation underscores the high stakes of the current impasse.
