A horrific runway collision at LaGuardia Airport claimed the lives of two pilots on Monday when an Air Canada passenger jet struck a fire department vehicle. The airport was immediately plunged into chaos, with authorities confirming 41 injuries. Out of the injured, nine remain in critical condition while 32 others were treated and released. The airport remains completely shut down until at least 2:00 PM local time (18:00 GMT) as investigators from the NTSB and FAA begin their probe into the disaster.
The incident occurred shortly after the Air Canada flight from Montreal touched down on the runway. At the same time, a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey fire truck was rushing across the tarmac to respond to a high-priority emergency involving a United Airlines aircraft, which had reported an “unusual odor” in the cabin. The fire engine intercepted the path of the taxiing Air Canada CRJ-900, resulting in a violent impact that severely damaged the aircraft’s cockpit and nose section.
Aboard the Air Canada flight were 72 passengers and four crew members. While the pilots sustained fatal injuries, all passengers have been accounted for, and emergency teams managed to evacuate the cabin within minutes. On the ground, a sergeant and a police officer inside the fire truck sustained injuries but are reported to be in stable condition. Viral footage shared on social media depicts the mangled wreckage of the aircraft, with the fuselage significantly buckled from the force of the strike.
The fallout from the crash has crippled regional air travel, with hundreds of flights from American, Delta, and United Airlines either canceled or diverted. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has cordoned off the airport perimeter, urging citizens to avoid the surrounding roads to allow emergency access. This catastrophic failure of runway coordination is being described by aviation experts as one of the most significant safety breaches at a major U.S. airport in recent memory.
