More than 750 U.S. service members have been injured since military hostilities escalated with Iran, according to updated casualties data released by the U.S. Department of Defense.
The Pentagon updated its Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) on Wednesday (August 20, 2026), incorporating over 50 newly reported military injuries. The disclosure comes as diplomatic talks between Washington and Tehran remain frozen in a stalemate.
An integration of DCAS’s ‘Overseas Operations’ directory and ‘Operation Epic Fury’ logs indicates that 18 U.S. soldiers have been killed and 757 injured since active engagements began on February 28.
The Defense Department introduced the ‘Overseas Operations’ logging mechanism last month to track casualties reported from July 7 onward. Although officials have refrained from attributing specific battles to these casualties, the July 7 timeline aligns directly with the Trump administration’s War Powers Act notification to Congress regarding renewed hostiles with Tehran.
The Pentagon previously faced sharp criticism from lawmakers and news outlets after temporarily removing four deceased and dozens of injured personnel from its public database—an issue later attributed to a “temporary technical discrepancy.”
Despite President Donald Trump’s public assertion that relations with Tehran are “moving very well,” direct talks remain suspended while naval standoffs near the Strait of Hormuz keep geopolitical tensions elevated.
