Water Resources Ministry approves Padma Barrage project, Sets Teesta masterplan timeline

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Water Resources held its inaugural meeting today at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. The committee formally announced the ECNEC approval of the Padma Barrage Project and confirmed that core physical construction for the Teesta Masterplan will commence next year.

The meeting was chaired by Committee Chairman Mohammad Shafiqul Haq Milan, MP. Minister for Water Resources Md. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee, MP, and State Minister Farhad Hossain Azad, MP, attended the proceedings along with committee members.

Following introductory exchanges, the parliamentary body evaluated the ministry’s performance over the preceding six months. Members lauded proactive interventions aimed at curbing riverbank erosion and implementing widespread afforestation drives. The committee was also informed about encouraging diplomatic assurances regarding the renewal of the Farakka Treaty with neighboring India.

A comprehensive presentation detailed the operational landscape of the ministry. Official records confirm that 93 development projects are currently active under the ministry’s jurisdiction, backed by a budgetary allocation of BDT 7,832.80 crore for the 2026–2027 fiscal year.

Committee members, including A. K. M. Fazlul Haq Milan, MP, A. E. Sultan Mahmud Babu, MP, Alamgir Muhammad Mahfuz Ullah Farid, MP, Munshi Rafiqul Alam, MP, Md. Izzat Ullah, MP, Md. Mashiur Rahman Khan, MP, and Md. Oli Ullah, MP, participated in the deliberations. Lawmakers urged project directors to maintain fiscal discipline, eliminate project delays, and ensure public fund utilization translates directly into improved grassroots services.

Senior ministry officials, including the Secretary for Water Resources and heads of subordinate agencies, were present during the briefing. They committed to maintaining project timelines while streamlining public service delivery across the country.
