Local government minister Mirza Fakhrul outlines election readiness

Date:

TBM Report

In a definitive legislative briefing during the Jatiya Sangsad budget session, Minister for Local Government, Rural Development, and Co-operatives, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, affirmed that the Election Commission (EC) has systematically initiated strategic and administrative frameworks to execute fair, transparent, and neutral local government elections. The Minister assured lawmakers that the statutory body possesses full logistical capability and readiness to conduct institutional polls within the legally mandated timelines. This official disclosure was presented on Tuesday (June 30, 2026) in response to a structured query tabled by Member of Parliament Sheikh Md. Rezaul Islam (Naogaon-6), with Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal presiding over the session.

Addressing a supplementary question introduced by National Citizen Party (NCP) lawmaker Mo. Abul Hasnat (Hasnat Abdullah), Minister Mirza Fakhrul, who also oversees parliamentary affairs for the Election Commission Secretariat, unveiled a milestone technological franchise for non-resident citizens. For the first time in the nation’s democratic history, the EC has deployed an IT-supported postal ballot registration framework explicitly engineered to secure the voting rights of expatriate Bangladeshis. Minister Mirza Fakhrul confirmed that this digital infrastructure will remain systematically functional and scaled up for the upcoming General Elections to maximize overseas electoral participation.

However, stabilizing financial policies regarding grassroots public representatives, the Local Government Minister issued a clear fiscal status in response to a query from MP Abdul Karim (Gaibandha-2). Minister Mirza Fakhrul articulated that the government currently retains no active statutory blueprint or budgetary allocations to escalate the existing monthly remuneration or wage structures for Union Parishad (UP) Chairmen and general ward members (Members), owing to broader macroeconomic rationalization strategies.

Furthermore, redefining regional administrative coordination, the Minister clarified the structural governance of District Councils (Zila Parishad). Responding to legislative inquiries, he stated that Members of Parliament will statutorily assume the executive roles of Chief Advisors to their respective Zila Parishads. Lawmakers will provide high-level policy guidance and consultative advice to streamline the execution of regional development programs, mathematically bridging central legislative oversight with local government operational structures.
