Chhatra Dal president and two others injured in targeted assault in Jhalakathi

Date:

TBM Report

The President of the Saturia Union wing of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Sajib, along with two of his close relatives, sustained severe injuries following a targeted armed assault by an alleged local narcotics syndicate in Jhalakathi’s Rajapur Upazila. The violent clash, which involved local political figures and domestic sharp weapons, has triggered widespread civil tension across the commercial perimeter of the sub-district.

The armed confrontation transpired late Monday evening (July 6, 2026) in the Lebubunia Bazar block under Saturia Union. Sajib, who sustained deep lacerations from the assault, is currently undergoing emergency medical stabilization at the Rajapur Upazila Health Complex, while his elder brother, Babul, and an associate identified as Kaif, were discharged after receiving primary clinical triage for blunt-force trauma.

According to statements filed by the victim’s family and local shopkeepers, an organized criminal ring had been operating an illicit narcotics retail racket within the Lebubunia market sector for months. Sajib’s open public resistance to this drug syndicate led to a heated altercation on Monday night, which rapidly escalated when an estimated 20 armed operatives systematically ambushed the student leader with local machetes and iron rods.

Conversely, the prime accused, Afzal, categorically refuted the drug trafficking allegations during a press briefing, branding the claims as politically motivated defamation. Afzal countered that the violent dispute originated from a separate commercial disagreement regarding coconut trading metrics between Sajib’s brother and a local merchant named Sohel Akon, further alleging that Sajib’s faction initiated the violence, fracturing the lower limb of an associate. Inspecting Officer (Investigation) Firoz Kamal of Rajapur Police Station stated that patrols have been deployed to secure the market area, and standard penal lawsuits under the Bangladesh Penal Code will be initiated immediately upon receipt of a formal written deposition.
