Two years post-uprising: NCP chief whip Nahid Islam critiques democratic transition

Date:

TBM Report

Commemorating the second anniversary of the historic July Mass Uprising, top echelons of the National Citizen’s Party (NCP) inaugurated a month-long memorial portfolio by paying solemn tributes at the Rayerbazar collective burial site. Braving torrential rain on Wednesday (July 1, 2026), the delegation convened to honor the fallen vanguards. Following the visitation, NCP Convenor and Opposition Chief Whip of the National Parliament, Nahid Islam, addressed the media, delivering a stern evaluation of the current administration’s trajectory and articulating that the structural, pluralistic, and discrimination-free Bangladesh envisioned by the student-led revolution remains drastically unfulfilled.

Addressing judicial developments, the Chief Whip expressed deep institutional dissatisfaction regarding the International Crimes Tribunal-2’s recent verdict, which sentenced Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASD) President Hasanul হক Inu to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for crimes against humanity. Islam contextualized Inu’s role as an active accomplice to the deposed Awami League regime (now legally prohibited), stating: “This nominal sentencing fails to render genuine justice to the 1,400 martyrs and over 30,000 wounded fighters. Inu directly institutionalized and legitimized the genocidal directives formulated by Sheikh Hasina. The NCP formally demands that the State prosecution file an immediate appeal with the Supreme Court to secure the absolute maximum statutory penalty.”

Islam further critiqued the incumbent BNP-led administration for its perceived inertia regarding the investigation velocity of July massacre cases, noting that only two verdicts have materialized since its inception. He urged the state to accelerate extradition protocols for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other high-profile fugitives currently embedded in India to face immediate execution. Furthermore, the NCP issued a strict administrative ultimatum, declaring that the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum must be rendered fully operational to the public by August 5, warning that prolonged bureaucratic delays would compel citizens to open the facility via popular direct action. The briefing concluded with the formal layout of the NCP’s “July Awakening to Build the Nation” campaign, scheduled to culminate on August 5 under the banner “Victory’s Jubilee.”
