At least 20 people were killed and several others critically injured after a devastating fire tore through a residential hotel in the Malviya Nagar area of New Delhi on Wednesday morning. The blaze erupted on the ground floor of the five-story ‘Mykasa Inn’ hotel and rapidly engulfed the entire structure. Emergency responders and fire brigade units managed to evacuate several trapped occupants, transferring the injured to nearby trauma facilities.
According to Delhi Fire Services (DFS) officials, approximately 40 occupants were inside the 25-room property when the fire broke out around 8:00 AM. A significant portion of the registered guests were foreign nationals who had traveled to India on medical visas for healthcare treatments. Because the incident occurred in the early hours, most guests were asleep, compounding the casualty rate. Verification of unedited footage circulating on social media platforms showed panicked occupants leaping from upper-floor windows to escape the thick toxic smoke.
The enforcement wing of the fire department deployed a comprehensive contingent, including two water engines, two water bousers, and a quick response vehicle (QRV) to contain the inferno. Preliminary forensic assessments suggest the fire originated in a restaurant operating on the ground floor of the building.
Kesar Singh, the head chef at the establishment, recalled the sequence of events: “I was attempting to ignite an electric commercial stove around 8:00 AM when an abrupt electrical arc triggered a massive flashover. The flames spread almost instantly. I immediately raised the alarm to warn the guests and hotel staff, barely escaping the building with my life.” Senior police officials in Delhi have cordoned off the area and initiated a statutory investigation into potential structural safety violations and breaches of the National Building Code.
