Why Islamabad will not accede to Trump’s Abraham accords expansion for Israeli recognition

Date:

TBM Report

Despite a high-stakes diplomatic campaign orchestrated by the Trump administration and explicit retributive warnings from US Senator Lindsey Graham, Pakistan is highly unlikely to compromise its seven-decade-long sovereign embargo against the State of Israel. Following strategic briefings between Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, the geopolitical discourse surrounding the mandatory expansion of the Abraham Accords has faced an impenetrable wall of resistance within Islamabad’s institutional corridors.

The transactional diplomacy deployed by Washington—which seeks to tie an expanded Middle Eastern normalization framework to a proposed armistice with Iran—has been flatly rejected by Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif. Legal and foreign policy attachés confirm that any premature diplomatic concession to Tel Aviv, in the absence of a sovereign Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, would trigger immediate systemic destabilization inside Pakistan. Furthermore, Pakistani policymakers have structurally linked the Palestinian cause to the dispute over Jammu and Kashmir; validating Israel’s territorial status quo without a settled framework for self-determination would fundamentally hollow out Islamabad’s international legal standing regarding Kashmiri self-determination under UN mandates.

While financial reliance on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia remains a critical metric for Pakistan’s macroeconomic stabilization, Riyadh’s current refusal to cross the bilateral normalization line without a credible, irreversible pathway to a two-state solution provides immediate diplomatic cover to Islamabad. In a competitive, highly volatile domestic polity featuring a fiercely active media landscape and robust pan-Islamic political factions, any civilian or military executive that signs onto the Accords would be committing definitive political suicide. Gallup surveys reinforcing that 91% of the Pakistani populace harbors deep solidarity with the besieged population of Gaza illustrate that the public threshold for compromise has zero elasticity.

Historically, Islamabad has demonstrated a calculated resilience against Washington’s coercive maneuvers, maintaining an independent strategic trajectory during the Afghan conflict and fortifying its deep-tier economic alignment with Beijing via the CPEC framework. Senior security officials indicate that even the White House acknowledges these systemic operational boundaries, positioning Pakistan as a primary candidate to opt out of the expanded accord grid. Consequently, as long as the devastating kinetic deployment and civilian casualties persist in the Gaza strip, Pakistan’s foundational foreign policy doctrine will remain completely unyielding to external transactional friction.
