In a major breakthrough, the main suspects in the assassination of Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, the Convener of Inqilab Mancha, have been arrested by the West Bengal Police Special Task Force (STF) in India. The detainees, identified as Faisal Karim Masud (a former Chhatra League leader) and his associate Alamgir Hossain (a Jubo League activist), were apprehended in the Bongaon area of West Bengal on Saturday night.
Sharif Osman Hadi was shot in broad daylight on December 12 in Dhaka’s Purana Paltan while traveling in a rickshaw. He succumbed to his injuries on December 18 while undergoing treatment in Singapore. According to investigators from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), the murder was orchestrated by Taijul Islam Chowdhury (Bappi), a former ward councilor and Jubo League leader, due to Sharif’s rising political influence and potential candidacy for the Dhaka-8 constituency.
The STF revealed that the suspects had illegally entered Indian territory via the Meghalaya border and were moving between various locations before attempting to take shelter in Bongaon. Their ultimate goal was reportedly to return to Bangladesh when the opportunity arose. The arrest has intensified calls for their swift extradition to Bangladesh to face trial. Police believe the mastermind, Taijul Islam, is also hiding in India, and efforts are underway to track him down.
