Nepal Set for Historic Shift as Gen-Z Led Party Nears Majority

Date:

TBM Report

In a stunning political transformation, Nepal is on the verge of being governed by a new generation of leaders who emerged from the “Gen-Z Uprising” of September 2025. Preliminary results from the general election held on March 5, 2026, indicate a landslide victory for the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). The party, spearheaded by popular figures like rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah and former journalist Rabi Lamichhane, has decimated the traditional political establishment, signaling a seismic shift in Himalayan geopolitics.

Balendra Shah, the former Mayor of Kathmandu and a cult figure among the youth, is currently leading in the Jhapa-5 constituency against the political veteran and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. The RSP is currently leading in 90 out of the 165 directly elected seats, a feat that has left traditional heavyweights like the Nepali Congress and the CPN (UML) struggling with single-digit leads. This result is widely viewed as a decisive mandate against long-standing corruption and administrative stagnation.

The seeds of this victory were sown during the September 2025 uprising, which led to the collapse of the Oli-led government. Following a brief period under an interim administration headed by former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, the youth turned their street-level activism into a formidable electoral force. Unlike traditional parties, the RSP leveraged social media and direct engagement to promise a transparent, merit-based governance model, which resonated deeply with disillusioned voters.

While international observers draw parallels with the 2024 uprising in Bangladesh, the electoral outcome in Nepal presents a distinct contrast. In Bangladesh, voters eventually reverted to established political parties post-revolution, but Nepal has chosen to place its absolute trust in new, untried leadership. This transition marks the end of an era for old-guard politicians like Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) and KP Sharma Oli, as Nepal’s youth successfully transition from revolutionaries to rulers.
