Union Shibir president murdered over school committee dispute in Gaibandha; Mob torches rival houses

Date:

TBM Report

A severe escalation of localized political violence in the Saghatta Upazila of Gaibandha district left an Islamist student leader dead, triggering immediate retaliatory mob arson against rival households. The casualty has been identified as 24-year-old Saifullah Bari, the active President of the Bonarpara Union unit of the Islami Chhatra Shibir and son of Habibur Rahman from Shimultair village. The homicide, which originated from a dispute over the formation of a government primary school’s Managing Committee, has caused widespread civil unrest across the sub-district, necessitating the emergency deployment of rapid-response police formations.

According to localized police command units and eyewitness testimonies, the structural friction materialized on Sunday afternoon during an assembly convened to evaluate the School Management Committee (SMC) electoral parameters in Bati village. A verbal altercation between rival factions rapidly degenerated into kinetic violence, during which Saifullah Bari and his operational associate, Salahuddin, were severely beaten with blunt instruments. Local residents evacuated both casualties to the Saghatta Upazila Health Complex. Following a critical decline in his vital telemetry, Bari was transferred to Gaibandha General Hospital, where clinical staff officially declared him deceased upon arrival. The co-casualty, Salahuddin, remains under intensive medical care at the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura.

The announcement of Bari’s demise catalyzed immediate civil unrest. On Sunday evening, active cadres from the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatra Shibir, reinforced by hundreds of agitated villagers, organized a high-velocity protest march through Bonarpara. Following the demonstration, a splinter faction of the crowd targeted the homesteads of the suspected perpetrators, initiating widespread vandalism and structural arson. Toffajal Hossain, the Station Officer of the Saghatta Upazila Fire Service and Civil Defense, confirmed that emergency fire tenders deployed to the perimeter required approximately two and a half hours of continuous suppression operations to completely contain the blaze and prevent it from engulfing adjacent civilian properties.

On Monday morning, the operational leadership of Chhatra Shibir escalated their demands by staging a massive demonstration through the arterial thoroughfares of Gaibandha municipal headquarters, demanding the immediate apprehension of the masterminds behind the homicide. Addressing the legal status of the riot, Mahbubur Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Saghatta Police Station, verified that while the tactical units are investigating the arson, no formal property damage dockets have been filed by the affected families. “The administrative processing for the primary homicide case by the victim’s family is currently underway, and targeted raids are active to neutralize the perpetrators,” OC Rahman asserted.
