DB seeks 10-day remand for actor Zaher Alvi in wife’s suicide abetment case

The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has formally moved a statutory petition seeking a 10-day punitive remand for popular television actor Md. Neyamot Ullah Bhuiyan, widely known by his screen name Zaher Alvi. The remand docket was filed on Sunday (June 21, 2026) before the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court by the case’s primary investigator, Inspector Md. Abdul Malek of the DB Mirpur Zonal Team. Following preliminary scrutiny, Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin designated the upcoming Wednesday for a comprehensive remand evaluation hearing in the physical presence of the accused.

The operational escalation arrives exactly three days after Alvi surrendered before the metropolitan magistrate on June 18, following months of evasion. During the bail mitigation sequence, defence attorneys asserted that Alvi was physically deployed for a television production layout in Nepal during the chronology of the incident and presented clinical records highlighting severe chronic asthmatic bronchitis. However, overriding the mitigation array, the court dismissed the bail motion and remanded Alvi to the Dhaka Central Jail, paving the pathway for the specialized intelligence units to claim active operational custody for structural interrogation.

The baseline of the criminal docket originates from an incident on February 28, when family members discovered the non-responsive body of Alvi’s wife, 33-year-old social media influencer Afra Ibnat Ikra, hanging from a ceiling fan at their Mirpur DOHS residence. Following an official post-mortem transport to Kurmitola General Hospital, the victim’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, instituted a first information report (FIR) at the Pallabi Police Station against Alvi and his mother. The litigation explicitly charges the actor with systematic domestic abuse, behavioral coercion, and continuous mental torture, arguing these compounding variables directly instigated the victim to execute the fatal self-harm vector.

The couple, who solemnized their marital union in 2010, shares a minor son. While the prime accused remained under structural fugitive status since the baseline intervention in early March, the secondary accused in the docket—Alvi’s mother, Nasrin Sultana Shiuly—surrendered before the judicial magistrate on June 4 and successfully secured conditional bail. DB cyber and forensic units emphasize that obtaining localized custody of Alvi is paramount to analyzing the digital communication archives, checking device telemetry, and cross-examining potential patterns of systemic domestic coercion.
