A fatal road accident at the critical Bijoy Sarani intersection in the capital late Wednesday night claimed the life of a 50-year-old man identified as Yakub Ali. The victim, an electrician by profession, was returning to his residence as a pillion passenger on a ride-sharing motorcycle when a speeding microbus rear-ended the two-wheeler at the traffic signal. Despite emergency medical interventions across multiple facilities, Ali succumbed to his internal trauma at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the early hours of Thursday.
According to family members and police logs, Yakub Ali had just concluded a technical assignment in the Postogola Bridge area and was commuting to his family residence in Mirpur. As the motorcycle decelerated at the Bijoy Sarani signal, an oncoming microbus struck the vehicle from behind. In a rare display of post-accident accountability, the driver of the microbus immediately transported the critically injured passenger to the Kurmitola General Hospital. However, as his physiological condition deteriorated, family members subsequently transferred him to the premier tertiary-care facility at DMCH for specialized neurosurgical intervention.
Inspector Md. Faruk, the officer-in-charge of the DMCH Police Outpost, confirmed the clinical timeline, stating that attending physicians officially pronounced Yakub Ali deceased at approximately 2:15 AM on Thursday during active treatment. “The mortal remains have been moved to the hospital mortuary for a comprehensive autopsy, and the jurisdictional Kafrul Police Station has been formally notified to institute legal proceedings and track the offending vehicle,” Inspector Faruk added. The victim, originally hailing from Olania village in the Galachipa sub-district of Patuakhali, resided with his family in a rented apartment in Pallabi, leaving behind dependents who now face severe economic uncertainty.
