Gas leak explosion: Critically injures five of a family, including a child

Date:

TBM Report

A devastating domestic gas leak explosion ripped through a residential apartment in the Bandar sub-district of Narayanganj early Thursday morning, leaving five individuals, including a minor child, fighting for their lives with catastrophic burn injuries. The tragic incident occurred in the Chanpur area of Madanpur union when trapped combustible gas ignited instantaneously upon contact with a spark. All five victims, four of whom belong to the same nuclear family, were rushed to Dhaka and are currently undergoing emergency treatment at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, where several remain in highly critical condition.

According to law enforcement authorities and local emergency responders, the explosion was triggered by gas accumulating overnight inside the enclosed structural perimeter of the house due to a faulty cylinder valve or supply line leakage. Ghulam Mustafa Ashraf Uddin, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bandar Police Station, confirmed the timeline of the accident, stating that the blast occurred the moment a family member attempted to light the kitchen stove at dawn. Neighbors, startled by the resonant blast, immediately initiated a rescue operation, extricating the victims from the blazing rooms before moving them to the specialized tertiary-care hospital in the capital.

Medical professionals at the institute have released a grim prognosis regarding the physiological trauma sustained by the victims, identifying them as Abdul Mannan (50), Sultana Begum (35), Siam (19), Mim (13), and eight-year-old Hazrat Ali. Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman, the resident medical officer of the emergency department, disclosed that Sultana sustained life-threatening burns covering approximately 90% of her body surface area. Furthermore, Siam suffered 77% burns, Mim sustained 41%, and Mannan incurred 30% dermal destruction, mandating their immediate admission to the High Dependency Unit (HDU), while young Hazrat Ali, with 8% burns, is under close clinical observation.

The local fire service and civil defense department have cordoned off the damaged structure to perform a comprehensive technical evaluation of the domestic gas infrastructures to determine the exact point of failure. Incidents of domestic gas explosions have seen a steady rise across suburban industrial hubs like Narayanganj, often exacerbated by poorly maintained ventilation systems and substandard gas fittings in rental units. The district administration has promised a prompt investigation into the incident, while the community rallies to support the family during this critical medical emergency.
