‘I know everything about a major assassination in Bangladesh,’ Claims Mamata Banerjee

In a politically explosive statement, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo, Mamata Banerjee, claimed to possess classified information regarding a “major assassination” in Bangladesh, alleging tactical involvement by elements within the Indian central government. Addressing a massive protest rally at Kolkata’s Esplanade (Y-Channel) on Tuesday—marking her first major public appearance since losing power a month ago—Banerjee alleged that India’s Union Home Minister Amit Shah had personally intervened to suppress news of the arrest of a prime suspect in West Bengal.

Banerjee detailed that a high-profile operative linked to the Bangladesh assassination had illicitly infiltrated Indian territory via the state of Meghalaya and entered West Bengal. “Our Special Task Force (STF) successfully tracked and apprehended the fugitive, which was a monumental credit to the state police,” Banerjee stated. She further alleged that shortly after the covert operation, Home Minister Amit Shah telephoned her directly, pleading in Hindi: “Please instruct the Bengal Police to ensure this matter does not leak out; it is for the national interest.”

The former Chief Minister asserted that she had maintained strict institutional confidentiality for the sake of bilateral relations and national security. However, citing ongoing political vindictiveness against her party, she decided to reveal the encounter. While refusing to name the suspect or the victim to prevent cross-border civil unrest, Banerjee claimed her memory remains an “uncompromised repository of truth,” adding that she is fully aware of the masterminds behind the historical plot, regardless of the recent regime change in Dhaka.
