UN condemns surge in child deaths amid Israeli military operations in West Bank

Date:

TBM Report

The United Nations has issued a stern condemnation of the increasing child fatalities in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, citing intensified Israeli military operations and settler violence. According to UNICEF, at least 70 Palestinian children have been killed since the beginning of 2025. James Elder, a spokesperson for the UN children’s agency, expressed profound concern on Tuesday (May 12, 2026), stating that children are paying an “unbearable price” for the escalated military presence and hostilities.

Statistical data provided by the UN highlights a disturbing trend: Israeli forces are allegedly responsible for 93% of the child deaths recorded in the West Bank since January 2025. This surge in violence has prompted urgent calls from humanitarian organizations for the strict adherence to international law. Elder emphasized that the constant exposure to military raids, shootings, and a pervasive atmosphere of fear is causing irreversible psychological damage to a generation of Palestinian children.

Beyond the loss of life, the ongoing conflict is severely impacting children’s access to education and their overall mental well-being. Human rights groups have reported a parallel rise in attacks by Jewish settlers on Palestinian villages, often coinciding with military operations. These incidents have created a volatile environment where basic child safety and security are routinely compromised, drawing widespread international criticism of the current security strategies.

The United Nations has urged all parties to the conflict to prioritize the protection of children as mandated by international humanitarian laws. The agency reiterated that children must never be targets of violence and called for an immediate cessation of activities that endanger young lives. International observers stress that without significant intervention and a commitment to de-escalation, the humanitarian toll on the most vulnerable population in the occupied territories will continue to rise.
