Proctors of Dhaka and Barishal Universities resign

Date:

TBM Report

In a significant administrative upheaval, the Proctors of both Dhaka University (DU) and Barishal University (BU) resigned from their respective positions today, Sunday (May 10, 2026). While DU Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed cited personal reasons and a desire for administrative transition, the resignation of BU Proctor Dr. Md. Rahat Hossain Faisal stemmed from deep-rooted discontent over the university administration’s failure to address faculty promotions.

Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, who took charge following the August 5 mass uprising in 2024, formally submitted his resignation to the Vice-Chancellor. Reflecting on his 20-month tenure, he stated that the university has now reached a state of stability, making it an opportune moment for new leadership to take over. Although he is stepping down from the administrative role, he reaffirmed his commitment to his academic responsibilities at Dhaka University.

The situation at Barishal University is considerably more volatile. Dr. Rahat Hossain Faisal resigned following the 94th Syndicate meeting, which failed to resolve a long-standing promotion dispute involving 60 faculty members. The protesting teachers have been on strike since April 21, accusing the Vice-Chancellor of failing to uphold previous commitments. Dr. Faisal expressed profound frustration with the VC’s management, alleging that the administration is depriving faculty members of their legitimate rights.

Concurrently, Associate Professor Dr. Mohammad Tanveer Kaiser has also requested to be relieved of his duties as a Syndicate member. While BU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Towfique Alam claimed he had only received a verbal request from the Proctor so far, the wave of resignations signals a deepening crisis within the campus. These dual administrative exits have raised concerns regarding the stability of academic operations and the overall governance of the country’s prominent higher education institutions.
