Mehidy’s fifer powers Bangladesh to 34-run lead on day 3 of Mirpur test

TBM Report

Bangladesh seized a crucial advantage in the Mirpur Test as they ended the third day with a cumulative lead of 34 runs. After posting 413 in their first innings, the hosts bundled out Pakistan for 386, securing a narrow 27-run first-innings lead. At stumps on Day 3, Bangladesh reached 7 for no loss in their second innings, setting the stage for a high-stakes fourth-day battle.

The standout performer of the day was off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who registered another career five-wicket haul, finishing with figures of 5 for 102. Despite a gritty century (103) from Azan Awais and resilient half-centuries from Abdullah Fazal (60), Salman Ali Agha (58), and Mohammad Rizwan (59), Pakistan failed to surpass the hosts’ total. The momentum shifted when Taijul Islam broke a threatening 119-run partnership between Salman and Rizwan just before the tea break.

The dismissal of Mohammad Rizwan, who fell for 59 while attempting a lofted shot against Taijul, proved to be the turning point. Mahmudul Hasan Joy safely completed the catch, ending a partnership that had previously caused significant concern within the Bangladeshi camp. Miraz then capitalized on the opening, cleaning up the tail and ensuring that Bangladesh retained their psychological edge with a slim but vital lead.

As the match progresses into its penultimate day, Bangladesh will look to build a substantial target for Pakistan. With both openers surviving a tricky final session, the focus will be on batting through the sessions to set a target beyond 250. Pakistan, on the other hand, will rely on their spinners to exploit the deteriorating Mirpur track and restrict the hosts’ scoring on Day 4.
