Marking the 127th birth anniversary of the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman formally inaugurated the year-long state-sponsored celebration, designated as ‘Nazrul Year 2026-27’. At an official ceremony held at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday (July 2, 2026), the Prime Minister initiated the year-long structural programs, which will be celebrated simultaneously across all 64 districts and 74 selected sub-districts nationwide.

In his inaugural address, Prime Minister Rahman evaluated that while Kazi Nazrul Islam was not born within the geographical boundaries of modern Bangladesh, his entire spiritual entity belonged to this nation, and the people embraced him with profound affection. Highlighting the poet’s historical footsteps in Trishal, Mymensingh, where Nazrul first arrived as a teenager in 1914, the Prime Minister disclosed that relevant administrative authorities have been instructed to evaluate the feasibility of declaring Trishal as an official ‘Nazrul City’ to preserve his monumental legacy.

The constitutional timeline for ‘Nazrul Year’ spans from May 25, 2026, to May 25, 2027. Characterizing the poet of rebellion, romance, and youth as a guiding beacon against structural oppression, the Prime Minister emphasized that Nazrul’s literature remains deeply embedded in the historical and cultural framework of Bangladesh. He noted that Nazrul’s revolutionary poetry and musical compositions functioned as an absolute source of inspiration for freedom fighters during the glorious 1971 Liberation War. The Prime Minister concluded that this year-long state endeavor aims to bridge the gap between contemporary generations and the poet’s egalitarian philosophy.
