At least three passengers were killed and over fifteen others sustained severe injuries after a localized commuter bus veered out of control and plunged into a deep roadside ditch on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway. The fatal transit disaster occurred on Monday afternoon in the Baishamora area under Sarail Upazila of Brahmanbaria district. Emergency first responders from the Fire Service and Civil Defence, along with highway patrol units, are currently conducting a joint tactical salvage operation at the crash site.
According to preliminary highway police briefs, the commuter bus, operated by ‘Diganta Paribahan,’ was navigating the highway when the driver lost steering control, causing the vehicle to slide off the tarmac into the low-lying ravine. Abu Taher Dewan, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the local Khatihata Highway Police Station, confirmed that three victims—comprising one female and two males—expired on impact. Local onlookers reported that a minor child was also among the casualties; however, specialized recovery teams have not yet retrieved the body from the wreckage.
The extracted bodies have been transferred to the state mortuary for formal forensic autopsy and biometric identification. Medical authorities at regional clinics cautioned that the casualty toll could surge, given that several retrieved passengers remain in critical condition with polytrauma. Extra police details have been deployed along the Baishamora passage to regulate transit flow and manage civilian crowds, while an official investigative committee has been constituted to probe whether mechanical malfunction or reckless speeding caused the catastrophe.
