A local land official was tragically killed after being run over by a speeding truck on the Asian Highway in Sonargaon Upazila, Narayanganj. The accident occurred on Thursday morning (May 14, 2026) around 9:00 AM in the Jampur Mirertek Bazar area. The victim, identified as Md. Anwar Hossain, was serving as a Land Assistant Officer at the Gopaldi Municipality under Araihazar Upazila.
According to highway police sources, Anwar Hossain was commuting to his workplace in Araihazar from his residence in the Masdair area of Narayanganj Sadar via motorcycle. As he was crossing the Mirertek Bazar stretch of the Asian Highway, a recklessly driven truck struck his motorcycle from behind. Anwar sustained critical injuries upon impact. The truck driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene immediately after the collision.
Local residents rushed a critically injured Anwar to a nearby private hospital, where the attending physician pronounced him dead upon arrival. Kanchpur Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shamim Sheikh confirmed the fatality, stating that the victim’s body has been recovered. While the police have seized both the truck and the motorcycle, the driver remains at large.
The OC further noted that the process of identifying the driver is underway, and legal actions are being initiated following the accident. The sudden death of the official has caused deep mourning within his family and the Gopaldi municipal administration. Highway authorities have reiterated their call for stricter adherence to speed limits to prevent such recurring tragedies on the national highways.
