Bangladeshi youth shot dead by BSF along Lalmonirhat border

A 25-year-old Bangladeshi youth, Khademul Islam, was shot and killed by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along the Amjhol border in Hatibandha Upazila, Lalmonirhat. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday (May 14, 2026) near the Bonchouki BGP outpost. Khademul succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to a private clinic in Rangpur for emergency treatment.

According to local witnesses, Khademul and several others had approached the barbed-wire fence near pillar 905/6S when a patrol team from BSF’s 78 Battalion’s Paglamari camp opened fire. Khademul sustained critical gunshot wounds to his face, chest, and head. While local reports suggest an attempted crossing, family members and neighbors maintain that Khademul had gone to the riverbank for fishing and was targeted without provocation.

In an official statement released on Thursday afternoon, the 15 BGB Battalion confirmed that they have initiated a rigorous investigation into the killing. Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam, Commanding Officer of the 15 BGB, noted that although BSF initially promised an internal probe, they later denied any involvement in the shooting. “We are assessing the nature of the injuries and awaiting the autopsy report to determine the exact cause of death,” the CO added, noting that preparations for a flag meeting are underway.

Hatibandha Police have completed the preliminary inquest and sent the body to the Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. Officer-in-Charge Ramzan Ali confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated by both the police and the victim’s family. This latest incident has reignited concerns over border safety and the recurring use of lethal force in non-combat situations along the Bangladesh-India frontier.
