In an unprecedented diplomatic move, U.S. First Lady Melania Trump is set to become the first spouse of a world leader to preside over a United Nations Security Council meeting. According to UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, Mrs. Trump will take the president’s chair on Monday afternoon, marking a historic departure from the traditional representation in the 15-member council.
The United States, holding the rotating presidency for March, has selected the theme “Children, Technology, and Education in Conflict” for this pivotal session. The meeting will focus on protecting minors in war zones and leveraging technology for education and peacebuilding. Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo is scheduled to brief the Council on behalf of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Mrs. Trump has long prioritized children’s welfare in conflict areas, notably intervening last year for displaced Ukrainian children through a direct appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin. While President Donald Trump has historically questioned the effectiveness of the UN and withheld significant funding, Melania’s upcoming leadership role is seen by analysts as a strategic exercise in “soft diplomacy,” projecting American commitment to global humanitarian issues amidst the ongoing fiscal tensions at the world body.
