Argentina faced a nationwide shutdown on Thursday as workers launched a 24-hour general strike against President Javier Milei’s controversial labor reform plans. Transportation was crippled, flights canceled, and schools closed, marking the fourth major strike since Milei took office. While the President was away on a diplomatic visit to the US, the streets of Buenos Aires turned into a battlefield near the Parliament building.
Police deployed tear gas and water cannons to disperse thousands of protesters who threw stones and bottles at security cordons. The proposed reforms aim to simplify hiring and firing, reduce severance pay, and limit strike rights—moves that the CGT union claims will destroy the “backbone of the working class.” Despite the government’s success in slashing inflation from 150% to 32%, the economic cost has been high, with 300,000 jobs reportedly lost under the new austerity regime.
