Shrimp seller fined in Brahmanbaria for selling jelly-injected stock

Date:

TBM Report

Authorities in Brahmanbaria have fined a fishmonger BDT 10,000 for selling shrimp injected with harmful jelly—a common fraudulent practice used to artificially increase weight and enhance visual appeal. The operation was conducted on Monday afternoon at the town’s Anandabazar area by the Directorate of National Consumers’ Right Protection (DNCRP).

Led by Iftekharul Alam Rizvi, Assistant Director of DNCRP’s Brahmanbaria office, the inspection team caught a trader named Suman Mia red-handed. Upon closer examination, it was discovered that nearly 50 kilograms of shrimp had been adulterated with synthetic jelly. Following the discovery, the entire stock was seized and destroyed on-site in accordance with the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009.

“This practice poses a serious health risk to unsuspecting consumers and is a direct violation of trade regulations,” stated Rizvi during the drive. He further noted that such market monitoring would be intensified in the coming weeks to prevent traders from exploiting the public. Residents of Brahmanbaria have welcomed the prompt administrative action, urging for continuous surveillance of the city’s major kitchen markets to ensure food safety and ethical business practices.
