In a dramatic turn of events, a 16-month-old infant, who was abducted from Khulna, was rescued late Sunday night from a desolate forest in Jhalakathi’s Rajapur Upazila. The child, identified as Md. Mihir, was found crying in a patch of woods along a canal in the West Angaria area by locals. The rescue brought an end to a harrowing ordeal that began with a 3-lakh taka ransom demand and death threats.
The incident originated in Dumuria, Khulna, where the alleged abductor, Tota Mia (35), reportedly kidnapped the child under the guise of taking him to a local shop. According to the child’s father, Mahbub Mollah, Tota Mia is the former husband of a relative, Moyna Begum. Embittered by their recent divorce and Moyna’s remarriage, Tota allegedly orchestrated the kidnapping as an act of vengeance. He stayed at Mahbub’s house overnight by claiming to be a “sworn brother” (Dhorner Bhai) before disappearing with the child the following morning.
Upon receiving the report, Dumuria Police initiated a tracking operation using information technology. Sensing the police closing in, the abductor abandoned the infant in the Rajapur forest and fled the scene. Locals, alerted by the child’s cries, rescued him and handed him over to the Rajapur Police Station. Officer-in-Charge Nazrul Islam confirmed that the child has been safely reunited with his father, and efforts are underway to apprehend the suspect.
