Devastating flash floods and landslips in Nepal have killed at least 95 people, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed today. Data released by the Nepal Tourism Board indicates that 403 individuals remain missing following the disaster, including 61 Nepali nationals and 341 foreign tourists across 26 countries. The missing list features 133 citizens from India, 47 from the United States, and 33 from the United Kingdom.
Tour operators confirmed that a majority of the missing foreign trekkers were en route to Mansarovar along the India-Nepal border region when torrential waters swept through. Swollen rivers completely washed away several riverside settlements and hillside villages. The missing individuals comprise 200 females and 203 males.
Rescue operations picked up momentum despite rugged terrain and adverse weather. Local police rescued 114 people stranded near the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa district. Meanwhile, Nepal Army personnel rescued over 80 people, airlifting 29 survivors from isolated patches using private helicopters, according to Radio Nepal.
Expressing grief over the tragedy, Prime Minister Balendra Shah described the event as sudden and catastrophic. In a public message, he offered condolences to the victims’ families, assuring that the government deployed all national resources and operational capacities without delay to rescue survivors.
