Prime Minister Tareque Rahman has directed the relevant authorities to expedite the installation of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven surveillance cameras across Dhaka to address the city’s persistent traffic congestion. During a high-level review meeting held at the Secretariat’s Public Administration office on Monday morning—the third such session on traffic management—the Prime Minister sought a detailed status update on the project’s progress.
The Prime Minister emphasized the urgent need to modernize the capital’s traffic infrastructure, instructing officials to set clear timelines for the full deployment of AI cameras. He also ordered the immediate removal of obsolete and unfit vehicles from city streets, which are identified as major contributors to gridlocks. According to the Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary, Atiqur Rahman Rumon, the government is committed to transitioning to a fully digital traffic enforcement system.
Since May 7, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has been conducting a pilot program utilizing AI technology at several key traffic intersections. These AI-powered PTZ cameras are integrated with software capable of detecting traffic violations under the Road Transport Act 2018. The system automatically identifies offending vehicles and issues digital citations to the registered owners, minimizing the need for manual intervention and reducing corruption.
The meeting was attended by the Home Minister, the Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, and top officials from both Dhaka North and South City Corporations. With the integration of AI, the government aims to establish a more disciplined and efficient traffic flow in the capital. The Prime Minister’s direct intervention underscores the government’s priority in resolving Dhaka’s chronic transport crisis through technological innovation and strict administrative oversight.
