Students of Jhalakathi NS Kamil Madrasa staged a massive demonstration on Thursday (May 14, 2026), demanding immediate justice for the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent youth leader and former spokesperson for the “Inqilab Mancha.” The protest march began at the town’s College Intersection and culminated in a rally at the Fire Service Crossing. Current and former students joined forces to condemn the perceived delay in the judicial process of the murder case.
Addressing the rally, speakers described Osman Hadi as a visionary who dreamed of a discrimination-free Bangladesh following the July mass uprising. They expressed deep frustration over the “culture of impunity,” alleging that a mysterious slowdown is being orchestrated in the trial proceedings. The protesters also claimed that although an individual involved in the killing was reportedly detained in India, no significant legal progress has been made domestically.
Sharif Osman bin Hadi came into the limelight as a vocal advocate against foreign dominance and a staunch supporter of the rights of the July martyrs. Before his tragic demise, he had announced his candidacy for the 13th National Parliamentary Election from the Dhaka-8 constituency. His leadership within the Inqilab Mancha made him a significant figure in the post-uprising political landscape, which students believe made him a target for his adversaries.
Osman Hadi was critically shot by unidentified assailants near the Bijoynagar box culvert in Dhaka on December 12, 2025. After being moved to the Singapore General Hospital for advanced treatment, he passed away on December 18 at the age of 32. He was laid to rest at the National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam’s mausoleum premises. Students at the rally vowed to continue their agitation until the perpetrators are brought to justice through a transparent and speedy trial.
