Fielding woes put Bangladesh on backfoot

Date:

TBM Report

After a dominant opening day, Bangladesh endured a grueling second day in the Mirpur Test, marred by missed opportunities and shoddy fielding. Despite posting a formidable 413 in their first innings, the Tigers’ lack of clinical finishing in the field allowed Pakistan to finish the day at a comfortable 179 for the loss of just one wicket. The hosts now find themselves on the defensive, with Pakistan trailing by 234 runs but holding nine wickets in hand.

Pakistan’s opening duo, Azan Awais and Imam-ul-Haq, laid a solid foundation with a composed 106-run partnership. The only breakthrough for Bangladesh came through Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who dismissed Imam for 45. However, the momentum failed to shift as Bangladesh’s fielders dropped several crucial catches, gift-wrapping lives to the Pakistani batters and deflating the morale of the bowling unit.

Following Imam’s departure, Abdullah Fazal joined the well-set Azan Awais to further solidify Pakistan’s position. The pair remained untroubled for the rest of the day, capitalizing on a lackluster bowling display and multiple fielding lapses. Azan reached a steady 85 not out, inching closer to a well-deserved century, while Fazal remained unbeaten on 37, ensuring no further damage before stumps.

As the match heads into the third day, the pressure is firmly on Najmul Hossain Shanto’s men to rectify their fielding errors. With Pakistan’s batting lineup looking settled and the pitch offering less assistance to the bowlers than expected, Bangladesh must strike early in the morning session to prevent the visitors from eclipsing their first-innings total. The hosts’ inability to convert half-chances has effectively turned a winning position into a defensive battle.
