TBM Report
What was meant to be a joyful Eid outing turned into a fatal disaster as a makeshift drum bridge collapsed into the Brahmaputra River in Dewanganj, Jamalpur, claiming the lives of at least four children. The incident occurred on Saturday (March 21) afternoon when an overwhelming crowd of holidaymakers gathered on the structure, causing it to snap under the excessive weight.
Local authorities confirmed that the death toll rose to four by Saturday evening after divers recovered the bodies from the river. The victims have been identified as Abdul Motaleb (6), his sister Khadija (12), Mayamoni (10), and Abir Hossain (14). According to Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Saiful Islam, while three bodies were retrieved immediately after the accident, the fourth victim was found during the subsequent search operation. Witnesses reported that the bridge had been in a precarious state for years, yet it remained a popular spot for locals during festive seasons.
Rescue operations, led by the Dewanganj Fire Service, remain active as divers continue to scan the Brahmaputra for any other missing persons. M. Rashiduzzaman Millat MP, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism, visited the scene to oversee the efforts. This tragic event has sparked outrage among locals regarding the lack of safety measures and the delayed maintenance of the temporary bridge, which had long been flagged as a hazard.
