A routine journey turned into an unthinkable tragedy as an 18-month-old infant was killed when a private car, driven by a Naval Officer, lost control and plunged into a roadside ditch in Jhalakathi’s Rajapur. The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, around 4:15 PM, near the Bagri Bazar area on the Khulna-Barishal Highway. The victim, identified as Meherima, was traveling with her parents when the vehicle suddenly skidded off the road.
The vehicle was being driven by the child’s father, Lieutenant Commander Imtiaz Ahmed, who is currently stationed at the Barishal Navy Base. According to police sources, the family was traveling from Mongla to Barishal. As they reached the Bagri Bazar area, the vehicle reportedly lost control and veered into a deep ditch adjacent to the highway. While the impact caused severe injuries to the officer and his wife, Rumana, it proved fatal for little Meherima.
Local residents rushed to the scene immediately and extracted the family from the mangled wreckage. They were quickly transported to Rajapur Hospital; however, the duty doctors tragically pronounced the child dead upon arrival. “The little girl had sustained massive internal trauma, and there was nothing we could do,” medical staff reported. The Naval Officer and his wife are currently receiving treatment for their injuries, though their condition is reported to be stable.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rajapur Police Station, Nazrul Islam, confirmed the details, stating that police units were dispatched to the site to recover the vehicle and facilitate legal formalities. The highway has seen a surge in such accidents recently, prompting calls for better traffic monitoring. This heartbreaking loss has cast a shadow of grief over both the naval community and the local residents of Jhalakathi.
