Saudi Arabia views Bangladesh as a key partner in realizing its economic transition under Vision 2030, shifting focus from a conventional labor-centric relationship toward broad-based economic cooperation. In an exclusive interview with Daily Amar Barta, Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr. Abdullah bin Jaafar bin Ubayyah shared insights into emerging trade, energy, and infrastructure prospects. A political science specialist with extensive diplomatic tenure in Brazil, Houston, South Korea, Geneva, and Guangzhou, Dr. Abdullah assumed his diplomatic post in Dhaka in July 2025. He noted that traditional ties, rooted in shared Islamic values and social affinity, are evolving into a comprehensive strategic collaboration backed by private sector interest from both nations.
Around 3.8 million Bangladeshi nationals currently reside in Saudi Arabia, contributing approximately USD 5.5 billion in annual remittances to Bangladesh. Highlighting the General Labor Recruitment Agreement signed in October 2025, the ambassador stressed the importance of rights protection, wage transparency, and skill verification. Over 750,000 workers migrated to Saudi Arabia in 2025 alone, but future demands will prioritize skilled professionals in healthcare, IT, construction, and hospitality.
Investment interest is surging rapidly, particularly in port operations and logistics. Following a high-level Saudi delegation visit in July 2026, potential investments of up to USD 1 billion were identified for Bangladeshi port and infrastructure projects. Companies like Red Sea Gateway Terminal International are actively pursuing participation in key maritime developments, including the Bay Terminal.
Agriculture, renewable energy, and petrochemicals present further scope for mutual growth. Combining Bangladesh’s agricultural workforce with Saudi investment capabilities can build resilient food supply chains. Additionally, Ambassador Dr. Abdullah described hosting the 2034 FIFA World Cup not as the beginning, but as a celebratory landmark of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing socio-economic evolution.
Extending warm greetings to the people of Bangladesh, the ambassador reiterated Saudi Arabia’s commitment to expanding trade channels, transferring technology, and building a sustainable partnership.
