Bangladesh ended the rain-interrupted fourth day of the Mirpur Test in a commanding position, reaching 152 for 3 in their second innings. With a 27-run cushion from the first innings, the hosts now hold a cumulative lead of 179 runs. Despite losing more than a full session to heavy rainfall, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and veteran Mominul Haque stabilized the innings with a 105-run partnership, frustrating the Pakistani bowling attack on a challenging Mirpur track.
The day was particularly historic for Mominul Haque, who became the third Bangladeshi batsman to cross the prestigious 5,000-run mark in Test cricket. However, his dismissal for 56 by Shaheen Afridi sparked a familiar debate regarding his conversion rate. Mominul has now scored five consecutive half-centuries without reaching a hundred, matching a record previously held only by Tamim Iqbal. Despite two dropped catches by Pakistan, Mominul’s resilient stay ensured that Bangladesh recovered from early tremors.
Earlier in the day, the hosts faced a shaky start, losing both openers—Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Shadman Islam—with just 23 runs on the board. Experienced pacers Mohammad Abbas and Hasan Ali capitalized on the early moisture, but Shanto and Mominul’s defiance shifted the momentum. Captain Shanto remained unbeaten on 58 alongside Mushfiqur Rahim (16) when bad light forced an early end to proceedings.
Historically, the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium has been a difficult venue for chasing totals in the fourth innings, with the highest successful chase being 209 by England in 2010. If Bangladesh can push their lead toward the 280-300 range on the final morning, the target will be psychologically daunting for Pakistan. With no rain forecast for the final day, the stage is set for a dramatic conclusion as Bangladesh seeks a historic Test victory.
