Administrative deadlock at Barishal University: Teachers demand promotion under existing policy

Date:

TBM Report

Academic and administrative activities at Barishal University (BU) have come to a standstill as faculty members ramp up their protests, demanding promotions under the existing “2015 Promotion Policy.” In a general meeting held on Monday (May 11, 2026), 106 teachers signed a resolution rejecting the Syndicate’s recent initiative to draft new statutes based on a unified national policy. The teachers asserted that any deviation from the current regulations would undermine their professional seniority and rights.

The situation escalated rapidly as a faction of the faculty declared the Vice-Chancellor (VC) persona non grata on campus. In a show of defiance, protesters locked several administrative offices, including the main administrative building, effectively paralyzing the university’s daily operations. Furthermore, a wave of mass resignations has begun, with several teachers stepping down from their respective academic and administrative positions in protest against the administration’s stance.

The faculty raised two primary demands: first, the immediate cancellation of the Syndicate’s decision to draft new statutes based on the unified policy; and second, the swift processing of all pending promotions following the established 2015 guidelines. “We will not accept any unilateral decisions that jeopardize our career progression,” a spokesperson for the protesting teachers stated.

The ongoing crisis has sparked concerns among students and parents regarding the academic calendar. While the university administration has yet to release an official statement on the VC’s exclusion or the mass resignations, the standoff suggests a deepening rift between the executive leadership and the teaching body. Without immediate mediation, the administrative deadlock at Barishal University threatens to disrupt the upcoming semester examinations and research activities.
