In a chilling act of violence, a 27-year-old man named Rakibul Islam was fatally shot at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka on Sunday night. At approximately 9:30 PM, an assailant opened fire, discharging four rounds in the vicinity of the national monument. Rakibul sustained a critical gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries around 10:30 PM.
Eyewitnesses reported that the shooter did not rely on gunfire alone; the victim also bore multiple lacerations from a sharp weapon. Bystanders displayed remarkable courage by apprehending the assailant on the spot and handing him over to the Dhaka University Proctorial Team, who subsequently transferred him to the Shahbag Police Station.
Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed clarified that the incident was entirely external, noting, “Whatever occurred there is being investigated; no one from Dhaka University is involved. Both individuals are outsiders.” Shahbag Police Sub-Inspector Mithu Fakir confirmed the gruesome nature of the assault, stating that forensic evidence is currently being processed to determine the motive.
The tragic incident has sparked widespread alarm, given the Shaheed Minar’s status as a highly sensitive and protected heritage site. Law enforcement authorities are currently interrogating the suspect to uncover the underlying cause of this targeted attack. As the investigation progresses, the local community remains in shock, demanding a swift legal response to ensure public safety in one of the capital’s most revered public spaces.
