An artificial fuel crisis has emerged in Jhalakathi following reports of the Iran conflict, as dishonest dealers have begun hoarding petrol and diesel to capitalize on potential price hikes. Since Sunday morning, local petrol pumps have been struggling to meet consumer demand, leading to massive crowds and frustration among vehicle owners and farmers.
While oil distribution companies claim they have sufficient stock in the Padma, Meghna, and Jamuna depots, they have restricted excess sales to prevent large-scale hoarding. However, Mir Ahsan Parvez, General Secretary of the Jhalakathi Petrol Pump Owners Association, alleged that certain dealers are intentionally creating this shortage to maximize profits.
Currently, these depots supply an average of 400,000 liters of diesel and 250,000 liters of petrol daily to eight districts in the southern region. Despite these numbers, the artificial supply gap remains a major concern for the local economy.
