In a tragic escalation of a long-standing neighborhood feud, a 30-year-old man was fatally assaulted in Nalchity, Jhalokati. The victim, identified as Milon Howlader, son of Selim Howlader from Shankarpasha village, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday following a violent confrontation over an electric line connection. The incident occurred around noon near the Polerhat bridge area, sparking tension across the municipality’s 9th ward.
Local sources indicate that the animosity between Milon’s family and their neighbor, Bellal Hossain, was not a recent development. The two parties had been embroiled in multiple legal and physical altercations over the years. The situation reached a breaking point two days ago when Bellal filed a police complaint against Milon, alleging an attack on his residence. Following a police visit to the site on Wednesday night, Milon briefly went into hiding to avoid immediate detention.
The fatal encounter took place on Thursday morning when Milon was heading toward the local market. Witnesses reported that a group led by Bellal, Shah Alam, and Ripon intercepted his path. While an initial scuffle broke out, the situation quickly turned deadly as the attackers, armed with sharp weapons and blunt objects, chased Milon down. Despite his attempts to escape, the assailants trapped him and inflicted multiple life-threatening wounds before fleeing the scene as he lost consciousness.
Milon was initially rushed to the Nalchity Upazila Health Complex in critical condition. As his health deteriorated rapidly, he was transferred to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, where the attending physicians pronounced him dead on arrival. Ariful Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nalchity Police Station, confirmed the incident, stating that law enforcement officers are currently stationed at the crime scene to maintain order. A formal investigation is underway to apprehend the suspects.
