A devastating wildfire in the southern Andean region of Argentina has destroyed over 12,000 hectares of forest, threatening residential areas, a power plant, and a school. Governor Ignacio Torres of Chubut Province suspects arson, citing evidence that the blaze was intentionally started. He announced a 50-million-peso reward for information leading to the perpetrators, warning of severe prison sentences for those responsible.
Currently, nearly 300 firefighters and military units are battling the flames, supported by 15 specialized aircraft. However, a prolonged drought, high temperatures, and strong winds continue to hamper containment efforts. Thick smoke has also reduced visibility for aerial operations, complicating the mission.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric has offered technical and manpower support to assist Argentina. Experts warn that the current crisis in the Patagonia region may surpass last year’s records due to the uncontrollable nature of this season’s fires, which typically peak between December and March.
