Government extends Eid holidays to 7 consecutive days; March 18 added

TBM Report

In a major move to ensure a hassle-free journey for homebound citizens, the government has declared Wednesday, March 18, 2026, as a public holiday. This strategic addition means that government employees will now enjoy a 7-day extended holiday period for Eid-ul-Fitr, spanning from March 17 to March 23.

The decision was finalized during a cabinet meeting on Thursday, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. State Minister for Primary and Mass Education, Bobby Hajjaj, confirmed the news to reporters at the Secretariat. According to the updated schedule, the holiday sequence will begin with the previously scheduled Shab-e-Qadr on March 17, followed by the newly announced executive holiday on March 18, and continuing through the designated Eid holidays until March 23.

The extension comes in response to recommendations from the Passenger Welfare Association and various transport ministries aiming to stagger the massive exodus from the capital. By bridging the mid-week gap, the government expects to significantly reduce the pressure on highways and public transport networks. “This decision prioritizes the comfort and safety of our citizens during the nation’s biggest religious celebration,” noted officials after the meeting.
