Middle East conflict casts shadow over Pakistan’s cricket tour of Bangladesh

Date:

TBM Report

The upcoming ODI series between Bangladesh and Pakistan, scheduled to commence on March 11, 2026, has fallen into uncertainty due to the escalating military conflict in the Middle East. According to Pakistani media outlet Geo Super, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is closely monitoring flight safety and security risks before finalizing the tour. This has led to a noticeable delay in the national squad announcement.

The three-match series (March 11, 13, and 15) is vital for both nations as they aim to secure a top-eight spot in the ICC ODI Rankings by March 31, 2027. Meeting this criterion is essential for direct qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup, to be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Following Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the recent T20 World Cup, major changes are expected in the squad led by Shaheen Shah Afridi, with the future of senior players like Babar Azam under intense scrutiny.

While the BCB awaits confirmation, the geopolitical climate remains the biggest hurdle. If travel restrictions in the Gulf region persist, the series might be postponed, further complicating the ICC World Cup qualification roadmap for both Asian giants.
