EU designates Iran’s IRGC as a terrorist organization over violent crackdown

Date:

TBM Report

The European Union has officially designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist entity, citing the “deadly repression” of anti-government protesters in Iran. EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas announced the decision on Thursday, stating that the IRGC now stands in the same category as Al-Qaeda and ISIS.

Alongside the designation, the EU imposed new sanctions on 15 high-ranking officials—including Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni—and six organizations. The move follows months of violence where human rights groups estimate between 6,000 and 25,000 people were killed. Tehran swiftly rejected the move, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi calling it a “grave strategic mistake” and a “political theater.” This escalation aligns the EU more closely with the US, Canada, and Australia, while intensifying pressure on Iran amid shifting Middle East dynamics.
