In a significant symbolic move, a beautifully crafted Arabic calligraphy of the sacred Kalima Tayyiba (“La ilaha illallahu Muhammadur Rasulullah”) has been installed in the main session hall of the National Parliament of Bangladesh. The installation was carried out on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, following a direct directive from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The calligraphy is positioned prominently on the elevated wall directly behind the Speaker’s chair, adding a new spiritual and aesthetic dimension to the legislative chamber.

The directive was issued during the Prime Minister’s official tenure at the Parliament Secretariat on Tuesday, where he conducted business from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM. During this time, he specifically instructed the relevant parliamentary departments to facilitate the placement of the Islamic creed in the session hall. This move follows a prior discussion led by the Prime Minister during a meeting of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) parliamentary group, highlighting his vision for the assembly’s interior environment.

The installation of the calligraphy is being seen as a reflection of the nation’s cultural and religious heritage within its highest democratic institution. Parliament Secretariat officials confirmed that the project was prioritized and executed swiftly to ensure it was in place before the subsequent parliamentary sessions. The presence of the Kalima Tayyiba in the chamber is intended to serve as a moral anchor for legislators as they deliberate on the nation’s laws.

Members of Parliament have welcomed the addition, noting that the calligraphy enhances the dignity and solemnity of the house. While the primary function of the chamber remains legislative, this aesthetic integration marks a notable change in the interior décor of the iconic building designed by Louis Kahn. The Prime Minister’s initiative underscores a governance style that blends administrative duty with ideological values.
