A massive glacial collapse triggered catastrophic flash floods along the Bhote Koshi River at the Nepal-Tibet border, raising the confirmed death toll to 623. Rescue teams retrieved 616 bodies across Nepal and seven from Tibet. Combined official counts confirm that at least 2,426 individuals remain missing, with authorities warning that casualty numbers could rise further as communication networks remain severed across the Himalayas.
Nepal’s disaster management agency reported that missing persons within its territory surged to 1,924. Across the border, China’s official news agency Xinhua reported seven fatalities and 554 missing persons in Tibet. Rescue teams noted that strong river currents likely swept several victims across the southern border into Indian territory.
The disaster left an unprecedented trail of missing foreign nationals, including trekkers, mountaineers, and migrant laborers. Aggregated data from Nepal’s tourism authority and foreign embassies indicate that at least 777 foreign citizens remain unaccounted for. The Nepal Tourism Board confirmed that contact remains lost with 622 tourists, comprising 473 foreign nationals and 149 domestic travelers.
Search operations encompass citizens from dozens of countries. Beijing confirmed nearly 100 Chinese nationals missing in Nepal alongside 260 unidentified foreigners trapped in the Tibetan sector. India reported 98 citizens missing, though search teams successfully rescued 85 Indian nationals. The US State Department and Nepal’s tourism office estimated between 65 and 90 American citizens missing, with three rescued so far.
The casualties stretch across continents. Official logs record missing citizens from Ukraine (62), Malaysia (51), Australia (41), the UK (33), Latvia (29), and Canada (30). South Korea reported nine hydropower project workers trapped in submerged tunnels. Missing figures also include citizens from Singapore (9), Russia (9), Germany (8), South Africa (6), Japan (5), and New Zealand (5).
Smaller contingents from France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belarus, and Vietnam remain untraced. The Nepalese Army deployed specialized units in Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, rescuing stranded laborers from flooded tunnels and airlifting pregnant women to emergency relief camps.
